The story itself continues to lay the foundations of the Malazan mythopoeia found in Erikson's and Esslemont's seminal works. For those who enjoyed those books, this is almost a guilty pleasure as origins unfold and great events are put into motion.

In spite that I found it a little bit repetitive sometimes, I fully enjoyed the narrative, love the language and the way that characters are developed. I will be looking forward for the continuation of the series. Hopefully will not be another 3 years or something!
After 20+ other books in the series that I have read, I have to say - Ouch. I hate it when a book that's 860 pages could have been 300...
I love Erikson's books, but this one has to be my last favorite so far. Erikson spends too much time having his characters philosophizing and rambles on doing so. The main fight at the end was sort of a letdown in the way it was presented. I will continue to read this series, but this has to be Erikson's weakest work of literature he has done.
The whole epic series of The Fallen (10 books) is absolutely fantastic. I feel like a really slow pony to just have discovered this series. It is much better that the Game of Thrones series since the arcs do connect, not everyone you like dies and even those who do may reappear in another form, each book has a plot and a satisfying conclusion. It is hard keeping track of so many characters, but the glossary is really helpful and remembering who is who.
The Malazan Books of the Fallen series is no easy read, and this, the second in a prequel trilogy is no exception. But if you read on and trust the author, all is eventually revealed and the stories and mythology of sorcery are terrific. Frankly, I love reading and rereading these books. The author shifts his focus from military and political leaders to the mud covered foot soldier and everyone between. Even the whores and camp followers have their stories to tell. Full of interesting characters and intense details of their lives and deaths, Fall of Light greatly advanced the overall story and I can't wait until the concluding novel comes out.
I am only halfway through the book. I have read his Malazan series, the first volume of this trilogy, and most of Esselmont's--obviously I am a great fan. Initially I found the complex, archaic and formal style of this book a bit hard to take, and was confused by the many plot lines--as was true of the Malazan series. It was a bit like tackling Tolkein's Silmarillion after reading LOTR. But as I persisted I was repeatedly struck by the devastating, pointed, and unflinching implicit references to, and critiques of, the vast problems and issues we--all of us--are currently facing on this blue planet. As several other reviewers have suggested, this is a masterwork, repaying the work it demands many times over.
Previous 5 star reviews are spot on ... this is not a swift, easygoing read. It's extraordinarily complex for the 15,000- some page reader of Malazan's. I relied on wiki-Malazans to refresh my character, race continent memory.

This installment is more philosophically interesting. Base civilization and humanity is explored through the characters. It's a masterpiece.

This installment includes 4 'books'. The first is confusing and unresolvable. Readers might stall here, but persevere. 'Books' 2-4 progressively resolve into clarity and deeper mystery.

The Malazan story is one of the most intricately woven fantasies ever written. Epic in the order of Tolkien's universe of stories, and as incomplete as GOT's GRRM or Dune's Herbert.

We can only hope the fantastic tale get's closure.
