Valor A Greystone Novel Book 1 eBook Taylor Longford

I don't know, maybe to a middle schooler, this book would be great, but it just falls flat to me. Insta-love and contrived. The most interesting thing to me was the evil neighbor and we never get the answers we want about him!

It was a clean romance though and that gets it higher than a one star review. It is refreshing to not have to skip pages in an effort to not feel dirty.

The world building was rushed. But the gargoyle thing was interesting. I wish we could have learned more about their history. I then looked at the author's other books and see she is writing a book for each of them! Way too many books in that series. Will not be reading book two.

Valor A Greystone Novel Book 1 eBook Taylor Longford Reviews

MacKenzie lives in Colorado with her mother and stepfather, both of whom travel quite a bit for business (I did think it was a little odd how often they left her alone for long stretches at a time). Her stepfather, Greg, who's not her favorite person in the world, deals in antiquities and has recently acquired some stone statues while on a trip in England, which he's shipping back to Colorado. It turns out they're not just statues of young men with wings, they're actually gargoyles that have been trapped in their stone state because of a run in with harpies 800 years ago. It turns out harpies want something that the gargoyles have, though, after 800 years, it appears that there aren't anymore harpies, left. It also seems that there's a possibility that there are no other gargoyles other than the ones that MacKenzie's stepfather found.

The first box that MacKenzie opens holds Valor, the other two hold his brother and cousin. Eventually, she learns their secret and they stick to her like glue to make sure she doesn't tell their secret until the other boxes can be shipped from London. Once they're all reunited, they plan on leaving and starting over somewhere else (though they were walled into a house, they were able to hear people and, eventually, radios and TVs, so they're pretty aware of what's going on in the world). MacKenzie and Valor spend a lot of time together, especially since he was the first one to return to his human form, and she starts falling for him, which complicates matters. Of course, that's not the only thing that's problematic. The remaining gargoyles can't be shipped from England right away because of the cost and the solution Greg comes up with to make some quick cash threatens all of their plans. Throw in an enemy that know their secret and things start to unravel.

Valor started off really well. When I read the first section from Valor's POV, I thought that this could be really good; it seemed that it might not be a book that skewed toward the younger end of the YA spectrum and would have some depth to it. Unfortunately, in the end I didn't feel that was the case. MacKenzie, who I hoped would be a really strong heroine, came off as too young and a bit one-dimensional and a little flat. I never really felt connected to her and she spent too much time worrying if Valor liked her or not. I don't mind angst in my books, I kind of like it if it's done right, but this came off as a little whiny.

Another problem I had with it was the bad guy and the action that finally took place at the end of the book. It seemed a little forced and I never got caught up in the danger the group faced. It was almost as if the author realized she needed a confrontation scene and just chucked it in.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the idea of this story. Gargoyles are such a change from the usual paranormal creature and I really liked the history Longford gave them. I just would've liked it if the story had been less light and had a little more darkness and depth. All in all, it was a cute story, it was just lacking some oomph and didn't meet my expectations. Even though I got it as a free download, I wouldn't have been shaking angry fists to the heavens after finishing the book if I'd paid a dollar or two for it, and, though it's not a must have for me, I may even end up getting Dare to see where his story goes.
I almost feel bad for rating it 2 stars, because there were some moments where the book made me smile. And I read it all the way through, so that counts for something. But unfortunately, there are a lot of things about this book that fall short for me that I just can't ignore.

The idea for the story could have been a really great one. But the author didn't take advantage of all the possibilities that are out there concerning the history of gargoyles and the plot lines that could have been created. This story was lacking a lot of action. By the time things pick up, it's already the end of the book. And the action was something that I feel was almost bland and it didn't make my heart pound, I wasn't at the edge of my seat, and I already knew the outcome.

The romance at times, did make me smile. But it was so damn cheesy. I hate cheesy. It was also something I've seen written and done over and over again. I've mentioned thing before concerning other books, and the thing is, if you're going into a direction that's been done before in YA fiction you have to be careful and put your own individual spin on it, or it's just going to be another typical YA romance. Unfortunately, that's what this romance becomes. And I think a large part of the problem is the writing style.

I say this mentioned in another review, but this story definitely has an issue with "telling rather than describing the story with emotion". I was being told this story of gargoyles and love and I didn't really feel any of it.

As far as the characters and their dynamic goes, it was decent. Kenzie is an alright female character, not too shabby. But her descriptions of Valor were constant and a bit nauseating, not gonna lie. Dare was probably my favorite. I think that the group dynamic was sweet, all of them protecting each other and stuff. There were some decent moments in there.

But unfortunately that's the best this book comes too; decent. It reminds me too much of "Hush, Hush", which I completely hated with every fiber in my being because of the writing and characters. Valor is saved with the characters of the story, but there isn't much after that. But it did make me smile. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be picking up the next book any time soon.
Easy & light quick read...

I purchased Valor because of existing reviews and let's face it...the price was right. Love $0.99 books!

That said, the premise of the story was different and I didn't know what to expect. I was somewhat surprised that I found the book to be rather enjoyable and it was an easy, quick read falling into the category of 4-6 hours to get from beginning to end.

Mac is likeable, Valor a dream, and the remaining characters amusing but less of them in the story than I would have liked. Taylor created several likeable gargoyle characters with differing personalities but basically gave them little time (except Dare), and all would have been fun to see more of. More interaction and banter between them would have made this book much better. But suffice it to say, they are there, you get to meet them and they add much to the story.

All in all, it's a good little read, and Taylor shows much promise. I look forward to see where the story goes from here.
